Dear I Can Ski Families,
For those of you who have yet to return your ski and boots this year, please note that the final rental return is this Sunday (April 22nd) between 2:00 and 3:00 pm at the Stanski Building in Red Willow Park (where we have the lessons). In addition for those who missed the last lesson, I also have a bunch of skill records / stickers which have been passed to me by various coaches.
As a final note I would just like to say a big THANK YOU to all the parents, grandparents, youth team members and of course the children who took part and volunteered during this years season. At the end of the season we had a 102 participants in the program, of which just under half were new to the I Can Ski program. In all fun was had by
all and I saw alot of smiling and happy kids during the lessons, which is a direct result of the volunteer parents and grandparents who lead the lessons and handed out the all important hot chocolate.
Have a great summer

Dear I Can Ski Parents,
With the arrival of some snow and the temperatures due to rise on weekend, I am confirming that the I Can Ski Lessons will start this coming Sunday (Jan 22nd) at 2:00 pm is the Red Willow Park. Upon arrival please make your way to the center of the meadow where I will identify this year’s coaches and lead a warm up, before we split into Classes.
An updated class list will be posted in the warming hut on Sunday before lessons, and as always Hot Chocolate will be available after lessons.
Please watch your e-mails and this website as the lessons depend on the temperature being above that magic minus 20°C.
Keep wishing for even more snow.

Dear I Can Ski Parents,
To reaffirm my previous e-mail, there will be no I Can Ski Lesson this coming Sunday (January 15, 2012). I have noted that the forecast is for 5 cm of snow Saturday, however it is prudent to a) not believe it until I see it and b) allow time for our volunteer groomers to set the trails.
Keep wishing for snow

Unfortunately due to the current conditions and the lack of snow, we are postponing lessons at this time. The icy conditions would make it very difficult for all to move around and the hard surface increases the risk of injury. Once sufficient snow has fallen and the trails have been prepare I will send out an e-mail informing everyone of the first lesson date. If the children are itching to use their skis some of the out of town ski trails are up and running (e.g. Strathcona Wilderness Center)
Once snow has fallen there is one further reason why lessons will not occur. If the temperature drops below – 20°C, I Can Ski lessons will be cancelled. You will be notified by e-mail which will arrive in your inbox by 11:00 am on the day of the lesson and a note will be posted on the Stanski website (http://www.stanski.ca/ ).
So with that I will ask that everyone wishes for snow and I’ll see you out and about
Regards
Richard

The St. Albert Nordic Ski Club (STANSKI) is holding another I Can Ski registration.
The program is designed for children 3-11 with a focus on having fun and developing basic cross country ski skills.
As a volunteer run organization whose mission is to promote and facilitate Nordic skiing, program and rental fees are kept low in the hopes that the club can introduce this exceptional winter activity to many St. Albert families.
December 11, 2011 between 2:00 pm and 4:00pm at the STANKI shelter in Kingswood park.

Welcome new and returning members!
First, I like to thank all our volunteers for their contributions to a successful Open House. We have 213 registrations at the Open House with a fair number of rentals going out to the Youth Program participants. Through partnership with River Lot 56 Society and the City of St. Albert we will have full access to existing ski trails system including the Pound Maker Hill.
Our season started with an executive board with the following changes: Audrey Hebel – Vice President, Donna Livingstone – Secretary, and Lionel Dumontier – Director of Trails. A big Thank You to Hugh Rutherford; our past Director of Trails and the unsung hero who has contributed so much of his time and energy over the years in providing pristine ski trails. He has also contributed in so many ways to the KingsWood Storage Building Project.
We have 40 Junior Development Team members ages 7 to 19. They have been training hard since Sept 19th, working on running fitness, core strength and ski specific drills and exercises. Our team has experienced growth in the club since last year and we are looking forward to another great ski season which will focus on preparation for the 2012 Alberta Winter games in February hosted by the town of Stony Plain. Our ever popular Adult Recreational Skiing Program will be expanding its rental equipment inventory to further accommodate those interested in lessons.
Between February 27 and March 3 STANSKI will be hosting the Nordic Events for the 2012 Canadian Special Olympics. Wayne McCutcheon, our Director of Strategic Planning, is in charge of the Nordic Racing for this event and continues to look for volunteers. Please contact him at wsm@shaw.ca if you can volunteer some of your time. Our Family Fun Day Loppet will be held using the Special Olympics course two days prior to the event on February 25.
Last but not least. STANSKI is an active participant with the City of St. Albert in their Recreation Master Plan with the consideration of a Comprehensive Trail System as one of the top ten priorities. The Comprehensive Trail System will have potential implication on STANSKI’s future ski trails development. Our Director of Strategic Planning – Wayne McCutcheon has attended a formal open house on November 1st on behalf of STANSKI. In the mean time I encourage and appreciate our members to complete a quick online survey to assist the process.
